How it works
spoon-template.com is a free spoon carving template generator. Design a wooden spoon in your browser, print a full-size template on A4 or US Letter, and carve from it. No account, no download.
Design
Start from one of the ready-made templates (eating spoon, coffee scoop, serving spoon, spatula…) or press Random. Shape the bowl, neck, handle and crank with the sliders, then drag the curves on the drawing to fine-tune the outline.
Print
Press Print / PDF and print at 100% scale with no margins, or save it as a PDF. The template shows the top view and side view at full size, with optional cross-sections and a grain arrow.
Carve
Cut out the top view, trace it on your blank with the grain running along the spoon, and saw the outline. Then draw the side view on the side of the blank for the depth and crank, and carve away everything that isn't spoon.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There's no account, no ads and no paywall. Your designs stay in your own browser: nothing is uploaded.
How do I print the template at the right size?
In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% (sometimes called “Actual size”) and the margins to none. Then check the 50 mm scale bar on the printed sheet with a ruler before you start cutting.
Does it print on A4 and US Letter?
Both, in landscape. Choose the paper size under Template. The longest spoon that fits is 255 mm (about 10 inches) on A4 and 237 mm (about 9⅓ inches) on US Letter.
What size should a wooden spoon be?
A typical eating spoon is 16–20 cm (6–8 in) long with a bowl about 4 cm (1.5 in) wide. Cooking and serving spoons are usually 23–30 cm (9–12 in). The starting designs are a good reference: pick one and adjust it to your hand.
Which wood is best for carving a spoon?
Freshly cut (green) hardwood is the easiest to carve with a knife and an axe: birch, cherry, alder, maple, sycamore and fruitwoods are popular. Keep the grain running along the length of the spoon, as the grain arrow on the template shows.
Can I save or share my design?
Save design downloads it as an .svg file, which you can open again later with Open. Share copies a link that contains the whole design, so anyone who opens it gets your spoon on their screen.
Does it work on a phone?
You can design and share a spoon on a phone, but dragging the curves and printing a full-size template work best on a computer.
Will my blank be big enough?
Open Your blank and enter the length, width and thickness of the wood you have. The template shows your blank around the spoon and tells you how much it's too long, too wide or too thick, and Fit to my blank shrinks the design until it fits.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once you've opened the site, your browser keeps a copy, so you can design and print without a connection, in the workshop or out in the woods. The 3D preview works offline once you've opened it online.
